Ergonomic Work
For computer workers and other people who are at a desk or counter all day, it is imperative to set up an ergonomic work area. Why is this so important? Well, one reason is that sitting is harder on the body than most people realize. When you are seated for extended periods of time, pressure is put on the spongy intervertebral discs. Also, the feet and legs may experience minimized circulation as it is more difficult for blood to circulate properly when seated.
The solution is to learn ergonomic guidelines and apply them to your job or even your home computer desk. In this article you will learn the basics of ergonomics such as what kind of furniture to buy and how to sit. While there are ergonomic desks, chairs are far more likely to come bearing the ergonomic designation. The chair you sit in should have lower back support and be adjustable. You may want to place a rolled towel or lumbar cushion behind your lower back if your chair doesn't offer a lot of support in that area.
Feet should be flat on the floor, and if they are not it is necessary to either adjust the height of your chair or use footrests. Because the keyboard should be at waist level, it is not always possible to have the feet flat on the floor. Footrests can be purchased most anywhere that sells ergonomic chairs and supplies and provide a comfortable place to properly position your feet. Some of them are slanted to increase blood circulation in the feet and legs which can also be helpful.
Your ergonomic work station should also be set up so that your hands and wrists are properly positioned. Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury are two common problems seen in computer users. When typing, do not rest the wrists on the wrist pad but keep them straight and hovering above the pad. Consider an ergonomic keyboard, which are made in a raised and slanted design for maximum finger, hand and wrist support and comfort. If you are someone who is on the phone a lot throughout the day but also uses the computer, a headset is a must have. Simple strategies like these go a long way towards preventing injury and making your workday more comfortable.
